The Married Bridesmaid

577769_10151379871563582_645192199_nI always figured I’d be the first in our group to get married. I am the oldest by about 6 months, but age doesn’t really matter when it comes to love does it? 😉

562022_4642972556135_435898635_nCourtney and Chris have been together 3 years. They met Courtney’s freshman year of college when Chris was a sophomore. I think the only reason I got married first is that I graduated college first! They are perfect for each other — and Chris really nailed the whole proposal, engagement thing!

The day after Christmas, Courtney wanted all of us girls to go dress shopping with her. I’ll admit I was a little crabby — the weather had taken a turn for the worst and I was really bummed we may not make it to Michigan for Christmas. On top of that, I’ve had really bad post-wedding blues lately. I felt my wedding day went too fast, the engagement went to fast, and I was kind of bumming that I will never experience all the joy and excitement that comes with a wedding again.

As a former bride and bridesmaid, I have learned a lot about expectations. I learned how a bridesmaid does and doesn’t want to be treated, I learned how a bride feels when things don’t go right or people think their opinion should be the most important. It takes a humility to be a good bridesmaid. To realize that this day is not about you or being comfortable — it’s about celebrating the love of a person you care about deeply. I’m so blessed by the girls who stood as my bridesmaids a few short months ago, and I’m happy that our friendships continue to deepen as time goes on.

Courtney and I have always been pals. We’re the closest in age, been into boys and clothes and jewelry for a long time — we just always seemed to click. I’m so honored that she stood with my on my wedding day, and I’m tickled pink to be able to do the same for her. Courtney, of course, looked stunning in every dress she tried on. I think I took about 200 pictures … it was really hard to stop! She found a dress that was perfect — but still kept trying on dresses to convince herself it was the right one. Every dress after was compared to the one she loved!

I’m so blessed to have friends like these girls. Some of us are related, others are not directly, but our motto has always been “Friends are the family you choose for yourself.” I couldn’t ask for a better family. I’m happy we can share special moments like this together, and I can’t wait for more as the years go on!
